Includes color frontis.,11 full page chromolithographic color illustrations, (each with captioned tissue guard) as well as title page, half-title and chapter head decorations after watercolor paintings by American Impressionist Childe Hassam.

An Island Garden was a collaboration between Thaxter and Hassam, who spent many summers on Appledore, and was a close friend to Thaxter. It was Thaxter's final book, which she wrote in the year before her death -- not only as a lyrical description of the lavish flower garden that fronted her home on Appledore Island, but also as a memorial to the unique life she led.

Considered to be a Sarah Wyman Whitman masterpiece.

Collected not only for Sarah Wyman Whitman's breathtaking Art Nouveau binding design and for its place in chromolithographic printing history, since the prints of Hassam's illustrations required 30 different stones.

A near fine copy with faint darkening to the spine that does not affect the gold decorations, and a few faint instances of foxing on the eps.
